Unity Game Development: Intermediate Systems and Architecture
Game Programming
What you will work through
A structured, practice-first approach to game programming - covering real tools, real code, and the kind of problems that come up in actual development, not just theory.
Participants across the UK use this programme to build skills they can apply immediately. Whether you work on pdfgear desktop setups or pdfgear windows environments, the workflow principles transfer directly.
Most Unity tutorials stop at the point where real projects begin. Once you move past basic MonoBehaviour scripts and prefab setups, you encounter questions about architecture: how to structure systems that do not collapse under their own weight as the project grows. This course addresses that gap directly.
Who this is actually for
Students should already be comfortable with Unity's editor, C# scripting, and basic scene management. The course does not re-explain what a collider is. Instead, it focuses on patterns: scriptable objects for data-driven design, event systems to reduce coupling, and object pooling to keep frame rates stable during heavy gameplay sequences.
AI and behaviour systems
A dedicated module covers finite state machines and behaviour trees for enemy AI. Students implement a complete patrol-and-chase system, then extend it with a simple perception model. The goal is understanding the tradeoffs, not memorising a single correct approach.
Course documentation is distributed as annotated PDFs. Students using pdfgear desktop can layer their own notes directly onto spec documents. The pdfgear windows version works equally well for those on a standard PC setup, and a pdfgear download link is provided in the student portal on enrolment.
- Modular UI framework module included
- Save and load system built from scratch
- Final project: a vertical slice of a game of your choosing
Designed by Priya Okonkwo, lead systems programmer with eight years in mobile and PC game development.
Programme stages
Each stage builds directly on the previous one. No filler modules, no repeated content.
Programme Overview
- Module 1: Architecture patterns - events, scriptable objects, service locators
- Module 2: Object pooling and performance profiling in Unity
- Module 3: Finite state machines and behaviour trees for AI
- Module 4: Save systems, serialisation, and data persistence
- Module 5: Modular UI with Unity UI Toolkit
- Module 6: Final project development and peer review
Core Practice Track
The central module focuses on hands-on game programming exercises. Participants work through interactive assignments that mirror real development scenarios - from physics systems to input handling and game loop architecture.
Tools discussed include cross-platform documentation workflows, including how pdfgear download and pdfgear desktop utilities fit into a modern developer's reference management process.
"The exercises felt like actual work, not busywork. I shipped a small prototype by week three." - Participant, Manchester
Collaborative Review
- Peer code review sessions with structured feedback
- Group debugging challenges on shared repositories
- Live Q&A with programme leads each fortnight
- Final project presentation to cohort
